Incident at Lackey High School

Yes there was an incident of alleged sexual assault at Lackey High School. A student has been charged. I cannot release specifics of the incident, but here is a news report.

Teen Arrested for Sexual Assault at Lackey High School

LA PLATA, Md. (Feb. 5, 2009) -- Serious violence in the public schools seems to be Charles County's latest social issue. In early January, a 16-year-old female student was stabbed in the back by a like-aged male student at Maurice McDonough High School in Pomfret. Yesterday, a student at Henry Lackey High School in Indian Head says she was sexually assaulted in an empty classroom around 2 pm. Anthony Hansley, 18, of White Plains, was arrested today and charged with second-degree rape and second-degree assault in connection with the incident.

I can't help but wonder what made this particular alleged rape hit the light of day when administrators swiftly denied and swept several other alleged rapes quietly swept under the rug (or so they thought). What made this one different?

Anonymous,
That I don't know...I was shocked to see on the news last night myself.

Also, please wait for the investigation to be completed before judging.

However, unoccupied classrooms could be locked after-school hours and doors could be locked for no outside entry but still allow those inside to go out in case of emergency.

With that being said, there is also the old saying that very much pertains to todays teens no matter the situation, “where there is a will, there is a way.”

Maybe the infamous CCPS rug just can't hide any more dirt.

Please remember "alleged" means only that an accusation has been made. Not that the party has been found guilty.

This event, as related in the newspaper article, seems off. When Henry E. Lackey H.S. was renovated, one of the presentations to the Board of Education involved the hi-tech surveillance system that had been installed in and around the school. No specifics were provided, but the impression was that the school would be heavily monitored. One has to wonder – there is no camera coverage of the hallway where this student claims to have been grabbed? Are the students aware of that? In other words, are there “dead zones” of surveillance, and are the students aware of those locations?

In addition, most schools (after hours on a regular or half-day) are not empty, especially around the time this is supposed to have taken place. It would not be unusual for some teachers to be there, or building service workers, even students. I find it difficult to believe that a student was “grabbed” and “forced into a classroom” and no one saw, or heard, anything. Wow.

LegalBeaglette,
Yes, there are MANY dead zones to the surveillance system at Lackey and any students with ten minutes of time, an iota of intelligence and the slightest initiative can identify them, plot them, and avoid them. Furthermore, there is no active monitoring of the system at the school, it only records tape in the event that it is needed as evidence. Stupid, if you ask me. Evidence is nice, intervention is better.
Oh, and those cameras? They don't do video - they do stills, I believe 1 snap per second (maybe less). Speed can defeat that frame rate, but in the case of a struggle, such speed would be difficult to achieve.

Anonymous @11:17,
The event I posted was public information and in the Indy. As for the incident anonymous @ 11:00 posted, I know nothing about it.

Let me also say that while rape is a reportable offense (to the public), consensual sex of students is only reportable to their parent/guardians.
