Notes from Board of Education Meeting, 5/8/18

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes.

  • Mcgraw - MABE meeting to review legislation.  It can be found HERE.  Reviewing MABE policies.  CC Scholarship committee meeting, over 400 applicants.  
  • Lukas - TC Martin 50th celebration, Westlake AP celebration congratulations, AVID Senior Celebration, Sports - best of luck to all
  • Kelly - Westlake MS track meet, student liaisons thank you, teacher appreciation week, congratulations to all graduates.
  • Palko - Reading Partners, thank you. TC Martin 50th anniversary, Little Mermaid, Westlake AP celebration, AVID graduates 59, MABE Resolutions, from Ms. Marshall - thank you.

Discipline review/restorative circles - Report
  • S.H.I.E.L.D. program at St. Charles HS - READ THIS REPORT
    • Assigned by referral
    • Therapeutic learning opportunity; made so students don't WANT to go back.  (receives work and counseling)
  • Restorative Practices at Mattawoman - will be added to all schools
  • ASPIRE - K-2 - 
  • Parent Shadowing - All schools for second semester; the only struggle with this program is if a parent declines or does not agree to terms of program.

  • Theresa Hicks - JP Ryon parent, 4th & 5th grade and children don't feel safe.  Has spoken with principal, long term sub walked out during class, VP left, parents never notified, no communication with parents.  5th grade in trailers and no security.  A lot of children misbehaving sent to office and then sent back to class.  
  • LeAnn Bold - JP Ryon parent for 7 years, communication with parents is lacking,principal does not communicate incidents to parents immediately.  Students disrupting class.  Promotion ceremony, no communication.

Board of Education Meeting Agenda for 5/8/18

The Board of Education’s next monthly meeting is Tuesday, May 8 at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building on Radio Station Road in La Plata. The public portion of the meeting begins at 1 p.m. and student and staff recognition starts at 4:30 p.m. The meeting is televised live on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon FiOS Channel 12 and is rebroadcast throughout the week.
