Notes from Board of Education Work Session, 5/20/19

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes.


Executive session – 5 p.m.  
Call to order – 6 p.m. - Pledge of Allegiance
Public Forum - None
FY 2020 Operating budget - Report
  • Wilson - Kirwan Commission funding questions and impact on line items
  • Lukas - transportation of private school students, $300k, provide additional information provided....not dedicated routes but we are obligated by law to transport..
  • For vote at June Board Meeing
Report: Discipline Review Committee: 
  • Dress code discussion - Report
    • Abell - rips in jeans are a safety hazard; pinky tips on shorts are too short; staff dress code as well.  No official dress code for staff but are expected to follow a professional dress code.
    • McGraw - feedback from principals, yes.  
    • McGraw - consensus was to leave the wording for dress length as is.
Motion to make the dress code amendment an action item;  Abell; Second by Wilson
Yes = Abell, Battle-Lockhart, Brown, Hancock, Lukas McGraw, Wilson

Motion to approve the dress code amendment;  Abell; Second by Brown
Yes = Abell, Battle-Lockhart, Brown, Hancock, Lukas, McGraw, Wilson

  • Cell phone policy - Report
    • Hancock - were bus drivers asked for feedback about cell phones on buses
    • Wilson - safety of having earphones in when loading or exiting the bus.
    • Lukas - levels on the discipline matrix needs to extend especially for disrespect.
    • Hancock - agree with Lukas

New Business - Revised Intercategory Budget Change Request Amendment
  • Sotomayor - Revise the transfer to postpone the funding for the Fresh Start Academy until July.
Motion to support the revision by Brown; Second by Battle-Lockhart
Yes = Battle-Lockhart, Brown, Lukas, McGraw, Wilson; No = Abell, Hancock
