Notes from Board of Education Meeting, 9/13/16

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes.

Executive session – 12 p.m.

American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees update
  • oral update on school opening regarding maintenance and operations of schools.
Student Board Member update - student update.pdf (127 KB)

Opening of schools
  • great, uneventful first day
  • Matula and Jenifer Elem opened their full day kindergarten additions
  • 350 Ipads purchased for pre-k students at Title 1 schools.
  • all middle schools (6th grade) have incorporated digital textbooks.  rollout still happening.  loaner equipment available for students.
  • 26,214 students
Nondiscrimination/gender identity policy
  • federal non discrimination policy read.  Letter from federal government regarding schools and bathrooms.
  • 11-12 states challenged the federal law.  Texas has overturned the federal letter.
  • Maryland cannot do this because we had an appellant legal case already in place requiring us to adhere to federal law.  Currently appealed to supreme court.  4th circuit
  • Talbot County recently denied use to a male transgender student to use locker room.  Student has filed a law suit and it's on hold waiting for the Supreme Court decision.
  • Current ways we are handling transgender students and issues that may arise which is not new and we have been doing this for years.
  • Discussion between staff, board members and students
  • approx. 15 students county wide have identified as transgender.  Only 3 have asked to use the bathroom they have identified with.  not an issue for the students

Mr. Lukas and myself left at this time in order to attend the Commissioners Public Forum on School Allocations and therefore I could not record the details of the public forum and action items.
