The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes.

  • Policy series 1000 - Individual board members asked for clarification on some of the changes, nothing major changed.
  • Billingsley Elementary School update
    • Recommendation by staff to delay opening due to permitting delays and weather conditions.  Other two options not feasible.  
      • Accelerated schedule = costs $5.9M must decide by 9/30
      • Portable classrooms = costs $3.8M must decide by 11/1
    • Lukas - delay in permitting
    • Kelly - county and state is at fault; can we ask them to cover the cost
    • no more funding available from the state
Motion to delay the opening until 2019 by McGraw; Second by Palko
Yes = Crawford, Lukas, McGraw, Palko; No = Abell, Kelly; Absent = Marshall

Unfinished business
  • Discipline and eligibility - Oral report
    • Policy 6431 - 2.5 GPA, no F's, cannot have failed a grade, fewer than 5 days of absence. 
    • Code of Conduct states if a child is suspended they are ineligible during the suspension.  Of course if you were suspended for more than 5 days you would be ineligible.
    • Athletic Handbook - student athletes who are suspended do not automatically return to eligibility.  Must be reinstated by the Principal and AD.  If a second suspension occurs, automatically ineligible for the remainder of the season.
    • data collected from 2 high schools athletes.  
      • one school - 307 students participate and of them 13 had been suspended 4.2%
      • second school - 614 athletes and of them 18 had been suspended 3%
    • Administrators feel extracurricular activities compliment the curriculum and helps getting the student to adult hood.
    • Student board member - thinks charles county sets high standards for eligibility. agrees it is a privilege

The Board of Education’s next monthly meeting is Tuesday, Sept. 12 at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building on Radio Station Road in La Plata. The public portion of the meeting begins at 1 p.m. The meeting is televised live on Comcast Channel 96 and Verizon FiOS Channel 12 and is rebroadcast throughout the week.
Board meetings are also streamed live on the school system website at www.ccboe.com. Select the live streaming image posted on the front page to access the meeting. The following is a tentative meeting agenda and is subject to change.
