Notes from the Board of Education Meeting, 4/20/10

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes.

- One Room School House - Edward L. Sanders, wife and son attended and spoke of the donation of the school house to CCPS. It has been relocated to the Davis Middle School Site.
- New High School - reviewed design & floor plan. Budget is $59,580,000 without pool. Pool would cost $6.2M. Bidding to start soon & bidding is very competitive. Possible for budget to include pool. Still planning on 1600 seat HS (school will open overcrowded)...state wants 1300; building designed for plan to cut back, but would delay planned opening of 2013.

Ummm...revision to superintendent's contract? An "Action Item?" Today?
What revision? It was not on the agenda. Yet another Super Secret, not for public disclosure?
Our overpaid superintendent's contract has always been public knowledge. One just needs to request the information from central office. Can't imagine what this "transparent" board has decided to pay him now. If I remember correctly, just a few years back he was making more than the VP of the USA. Just keep in mind, his salary is just a spit in the ocean compared to his entire compensation package. Wonder how long it will take the Independent to publish the latest escapade to bankrupt the taxypayers of CC.
A copy of the contract is posted on the CCBOE's website. You don't need the Indy to FOIA it. Kudos to CCBOE for that bit of transparency.
That being said, I smell that fishy odor at Radio Station Road once again. First, as LegalBeaglette noted, it was not on the original published agenda. Why the change, why the rush? Was it a report item last month in executive session? Second, the posted contract is a four year contract, signed in 2009. Why is the board making changes to his contract mid term? I didn't see any reference in the existing contract to a re-opener. (Sometimes we included re-opener clauses in the EACC contract for salary discussions, especially when the contract covered 3 or more years.) A superintendent's contract has always been for 4 years (by law I think). This just doesn't add up. Something is not kosher. It's been my experience that when central office puts a rush on action items, nine times out of ten, it's so board members can't do their homework. What was the rush, and why the midterm re-opener, Jennifer?

Draft minutes are not posted anymore?
I am told the failure to post draft minutes was simply an oversight.
Have read the now-approved minutes for the 4/20/10 session. The topical reference justifying the executive session states only “the Superintendent’s contract.” Is the fact that the Board planned to alter that contract not relevant? Key word is “alter,” after all, since the Superintendent already had a signed 4-year contract.
Interesting, too, that the approved minutes refer to “renewing” the Superintendent’s employment contract in the item title (#26); only the body refers to the fact that it was amended, and does not really explain how, or why.
The voting public has no control over the Superintendent's contract; it has control only over the board members who negotiate and approve it.
