Notes from Board of Education Work Session, 6/27/22

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes. Individual names are spelled to the best of my ability.

Executive session – 4:30 p.m.

Call to order – 6 p.m.

Public forum  

  • Shirley Washington - bus driver many years.  Contractor closed one day after school ended.  Facing losing job.
  • Kent Vines - President Bus Drivers for Charles County.  See a lot of unfairness.  Plead for consideration.
  • Vontosha Simms - Mental health awareness.  Support bus drivers.  Need a livable wage.  Buses are out of date.  Electrification of school buses.  Get rid of contractors and government should own.
  • Crystal Stunning - bus driver.  CCBOE should give the drivers who lost jobs first priority.
  • Marvin Mosby - bus driver.  Support for drivers who lost jobs.
  • Jerome Ned - Need clear direction on if CCPS is going to take drivers and routes.
  • Carlita Burke - bus driver. concerned about routes, children.  Ms Savoy lost 28 years of service.
  • Mashawn Hines - Dislocated bus drivers.  We care for the kids.  We know them, our routes, etc.
  • Earl beatty - Local 689 organizer.  Pooled money to have picnic.  Everyone invited to picnic.  Contract for $4M & contractor cannot stay in business?
  • McKayla Wilkes - Community member supporting bus drivers.
  • Shawna Mars - parent; support bus drivers.
  • Karen Dresser - Consider one failing grade for eligibility on extra curricular activities.  Quotes and research of support.  attend band competition.
  • Yolanda Stinnett - Varsity Cheerleading Coach at Westlake; extracurricular policy, get rid of absence requirement.

Action item

  • Eligibility Policy 6431
    • McGraw - supports inclusion not seclusion.  Wants to include one "F".
    • Herd - Agree strongly with Ms. McGraw.  Can support it.  Thinks we need to remove the absence requirement.
    • Hancock - against any amendments
