Notes from Board of Education Meeting, 5/11/21

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes. Individual names are spelled to the best of my ability.

Superintendent’s update to the Board - Report

Board Member correspondence 
  • Lukas - Happy Mothers Day to all the moms; attended Turner and Stoddert tours and renovations in District 4; took a tour with Dr. Salmon, State Superintendent; Equity Task Force Meetings; sports events.
  • Battle-Lockhart - Happy Mothers Day; Teacher Appreciation Week; Happy Nurses Week; Equity Task Force; Superintendent Search
  • Brown - Tour Turner and Stoddert; Tour with Dr. Salmon at North Point, Hanson and Ryan; groundbreaking at Newburg Fire Department for broadband; visit Mattawoman during Teacher Appreciation Week.
  • McGraw - Superintendent Search - 17 applications and first round interviews completed; second round interviews this week.  Survey for questions to interviewees and we received over 2500.  Interviews of finalist will be aired on CCBOE TV and asking for feedback; Tours of Turner and Stoddert.  Dr. Salmon tours.
  • Wilson - Attended tours already mentioned; Brad Snow elected to State of Maryland school transportation; see a play, McDonough and Lackey is coming up.  Transition of Superintendent search, graduations, summer programs, fall reopening, and COVID exhaustion...keep spirits up and we recognize all of your hard work.

Reopening of schools fall 2021 - Report
  • All schools and center open at full capacity 5 days a week in the fall.
  • Expand virtual academy for 9-12 grades; one year commitment
  • Battle-Lockhart - Add more electives as we grow the program; supportive of tutoring
  • Abell - still attached to home school; Yes:  2 classes per quarter for total of 8 courses per year.  Thank you; Thank you; Thank you
  • Lukas - Will State resolution prohibit this from happening: no
  • Valentine - can students still participate in sports and activities; not as participants but they can attend as spectators and dances, etc.
  • Hancock - Four days a week being offered this year; yes based on school and availability of space

  • Clint Reganator - Parent of 2 at Wade - really likes the teachers; daughter has autism and option to opt out and therefore not all of the IEP is being followed.    Concerned about kids going back to school; government gives money for updated HVAC systems and which schools have them.
  • Melissa Carpenter - lifelong resident of LaPlata.  Last week was Teacher Appreciation week but i would rather be respected by colleagues.  Professional Development was outdated.  No social media saying thank you from CCPS last week.

Agenda for Board of Education Meeting, 5/11/21

 The Board of Education’s next regular meeting is 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11. The Board will meet in person at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building. The Starkey Building is located at 5980 Radio Station Road in La Plata. The meeting will stream live on the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) website, www.ccboe.com. CCPS also will post the meeting on CCPSTV under the Board meeting menu at ccboe.com.

Public forum for this meeting will be held in a hybrid format of both in-person and virtual speakers. Speakers must register in advance to participate in public forum. The registration form is available here. Deadline to register is 12 p.m., Monday, May 10. Late registrations will not be accepted. Registered speakers will receive additional information by email.
