Notes from Board of Education Work Session 2/28/22

The below notes are my personal notes and are not intended to be all-inclusive or official minutes for the Board of Education meetings and are provided as a request from my supporters and the general public in a personal effort to be more transparent. Although I have diligently tried to make these notes as unbiased and accurate as possible, I am only human and do make mistakes. Individual names are spelled to the best of my ability.

Call to order – 6 p.m.

Public forum – preregistered speakers only

  • Joshua Barrett - Parent. Unmask
  • Paige Burns - Behalf of Ali Raak.  Unmask
  • Joseph Dietrich - Daughter was held  at home for 7 days after exposure. while others had 5 days.
  • Will Lewis - Teacher St. Charles.  Thank you to each of you.  Decisions were not easy for elected officials.  People criticize.  Easy after hindsight.  Keyboard warriors.  Data says it's time to unmask.  Thank you.
  • Kristen Lucas - 2 in K and 1 in 2nd grade.  Unmask
  • Ashley Moore - Parent.  Time to unmask.
  • Darlene Persons - Grandmother.  Unmask
  • Dr. Douglas Rose - COVID Statistics are skewed.  Deaths for car accidents, suicide etc were reported as COVID.  Unmask
  • Jennifer Bleam - parent; mask optional to start tomorrow.
  • Miranda Colson - Unmask
  • Karen Cross - Parent; Senior; Unmask

District strategic plan
  • Dr. Jeff Nelson, Targeted Leadership; facilitated retreat.
  • Plan presented and discussed.  All board members supportive.

  • McGraw and Abell asked for clarification on differing parts


  • Abell - Concerns over employee work days under Superintendent
  • Herd - Concerns over marking periods under the Superintendent
  • Hancock - no issues with the wording
  • McGraw - no concerns over the marking period.
  • Brown - no concerns with wording.
  • Herd - will defer
  • Abell - will defer
  • Battle-Lockhart - volunteers walking into schools still have to follow volunteer policy but mask will be optional.  Responsibility is on the parents.  Will masks still be available.
  • Hancock - Effective immediately
  • Brown - not for doing it in a rush manner
  • Wilson - It's time
  • Lukas - 
Motion to uphold Superintendents recommendation effective immediately by Abell; Second by Hancock
Yes = Abell, Battle-Lockhart, Hancock, Lukas, Mcgraw, Wilson; No = Brown
